GENERAL CONDITIONS OF THE ASSIGNMENT

Translations

1. The basic unit for the calculation of rates is the source sheet. A sheet is normally a typed page of 1500 characters (including spaces), i.e. 25 lines with 55 characters per line. For translations on legal or legalised paper a sheet is made up of 25 lines with 50 characters per line. Another reference unit is the source word. The calculation is made according to the source text. Where the format of the document does not allow this calculation, it will be based on the sheets or words of the target text. Rates do not include VAT. On the invoice a 4% social security compensation is included and debited to the client, in accordance with Article 1, Paragraph 212 of Law No. 662/96 covering social security contributions. The minimum billable text unit is one sheet.
2. The translation shall be commissioned by means of a letter of assignment or equivalent in which the sum due as well as the terms of delivery and payment are specified.
3. The translator must be able to peruse the text to be translated in advance. The original must be delivered to the translator in a clearly legible and complete state. Any other available documentation on the subject should be also provided.
4. The translator is responsible for the confidentiality of the client’s documents and their preservation while they are in his/her possession. At the client’s request and expense, the translator can take steps to insure the documents during transfer.
5. Pursuant to Directive 2000 /35/CE, payment of the agreed fee shall take place after the receipt of an invoice and not later than 30 days after delivery. On expiry of that period interest on arrears will be applied in accordance with Article 3.1 of the Directive and Article 5.1 of Legislative Decree No. 231 of 9.10.2002.
6. For large amounts of work the translator is entitled to a small down-payment on the agreed fee.
7. If unable to carry out an agreed translation owing to circumstances beyond his/her control, duly documented, the translator may relinquish the engagement without thereby incurring any legal liability.
8. For commissions agreed and subsequently revoked, a cancellation penalty of 10% of the agreed fee shall be payable the translator. Any relevant translation work already carried out will be made available to the client and shall be paid for in full.
9. Any complaint must be submitted not later than 30 days after the date of delivery.

Interpretation

Liaison interpreting

1. One working day is made up of 7 working hours; the rate may be calculated on an hourly basis (minimum 3 hours).
2. Jobs must be commissioned in writing.
3. For off-premises assignments, in addition to the agreed fees (including jours chômés and manque-à-gagner), a daily allowance or full board is due to the interpreter, as well as the reimbursement of travel expenses. Briefing days are to be paid separately.
4. The payment of the fee must be made at the conclusion of the assignment or on receipt of the invoice or equivalent, no later than 30 days after the assignment. After this limit interest on arrears will be applied in accordance with Article 5.1 of Legislative Decree No. 231.
5. On the invoice a 4% social security compensation is included and debited to the client, in accordance with Article 1, Paragraph 212 of Law No. 662/96 covering social security contributions.
6. If an interpreting assignment is cancelled less than eight days before the commencement of the assignment, payment of the professional fee is due to the interpreter together with the reimbursement of any costs that have already been incurred.

Conference interpreting

1. Please contact the interpreter beforehand in order to verify that that the topic is suitable for the type of interpretation required.
2. For simultaneous interpreting, the conference room must be equipped with one booth for each language. Booths must comply with ISO 2603 standards in the case of fixed installations and ISO 4043 standards in the case of a mobile facility. At least two interpreters should be present in a booth at all times. The working day of the simultaneous interpreter is 7 hours. If a working day in excess of 7 hours is expected a third interpreter must be appointed to allow for adequate rest times. A single interpreter may not work alone in a booth for more than one hour. The minimum working unit of one day is indivisible. For a recording of the translation it is necessary to request prior authorisation from the interpreters. If authorisation is granted, the interpreter will receive an extra 40% on the fee agreed for the assignment.
3. For consecutive interpreting the working day is 7 hours, with one interpreter for each language. If a working day in excess of 7 hours is expected a third interpreter must be appointed to allow for adequate rest times. A single interpreter may not work alone for more than two hours. The minimum working unit of one day is indivisible.
4. Chuchotage interpreting is a simultaneous translation of the basic concepts whispered to a maximum of two people. A single interpreter may not work alone for more than two hours.

Rates

Every translation or revision has its own particular features and must be assessed individually taking into account many variables: type of text (generic, technical or specialised), file format and formatting requirements, urgency, volume, and so on. • the duration of the service (hours, half-days, whole days, several days),
• the type of interpretation (simultaneous, consecutive, chuchotage, liaison),
• the venue (if the interpreter is required to travel),
